DO YOU FREEZE IN CRYOGENIC APPLICATIONS ?

Cryogenic Sealing Solutions provide a strong sealing mechanism for materials held at cryogenic temperatures, such as cryogenic fluids. Most commonly used are liquid helium and liquid nitrogen, which boil at very low temperatures, below −153°C (120K), as well as hydrocarbons with low freezing points and refrigerating mixtures.

Typically, applications where temperatures fall below -238°F (or -150°C)  to absolute zero which is -460°F (or -273°C) are considered cryogenic. Typical cryogenic applications include:

Cryogenic fluids include liquid oxygen, liquid hydrogen, liquid helium, hydrocarbons that have very low freezing points, refrigerants, and coolants.  In fact, cryogenics can be traced back to the 1800s and the first use of refrigerants.

ENGINEERING CRITICAL APPLICATIONS OF MINING...

Safety is the highest priority when it comes to working underground. This puts the greatest possible quality demands on mining machinery, products and service providers. At the same time, operating efficiency plays a key role in this industry as well. So it is essential to bring three factors into harmony: cost minimization and the simultaneous maximization of productivity and safety.

Sand, mud, water and fallen rocks are just a few of the challenges facing seals in mining operations. In addition, there are peak pressures of up to 250 MPa, which require a special sealing element design. High extrusion resistance is especially in demand. Parts of the seal should not extrude into the clearance gap between the equiptment elements.

Extending the operations intervals between overhauls and repair downtimes is crucial, since overhauls and repair downtimes cost indirect loss of profit.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT IS Explosive Decompression ?

Explosive Decompression - permeation of a gas into an elastomer under high pressure. It may not result in any long term effect provided the pressure is released gradually, allowing the gas to permeate out of the elastomer. However, if the pressure is released rapidly, the pressurised gas can expand explosively, rupturing the elastomer in a catastrophic manner. We offer a number of materials which have been formulated to be resistant to explosive decompression including ...Aflas®, FKM and HNBR. We work with a laboratory which posses one of the most advanced explosive decompression testing units in Europe. Capable of testing seals of various geometries up to 10,000 psi, under varying compression, over any desired cycle/time within a temperature range from subzero up to +250°C. With pressure, temperature and pressure release cycles simulating actual field operation, independent testing can be carried out to confirm the performance of seal types and grades before installation.

IS YOUR APPLICATION AS HOT AS WE SEAL ?

We offer an EPDM sealing material which performes at a maximum temperature rating in anaerobic steam up to 288°C, and may be used in short durations up to 315°C (600°F) in steam. This performance greatly exceeds standard EPDM materials.

Additionally, we provide a broad range of FFKM, resitant both to high percentage chemicals saturation (including methanol and sour gas), and extremely high temperature to +325°C.

ARE YOU SEALING CHEMICALS AT LOW TEMPERATURE ?

Low temperature performance of elastomer seals is becoming more important with the commercialisation of oilfields in cold locations, such as in Alaska, the North Sea and Russia. Traditionally, FKM seals have not been recommended for low temperature dynamic applications below -30°C (-22°F). This is due to the Glass Transition Temperature (Tg) of most low temperature ED resistant FKM elastomer formulations. The Tg is the temperature at which an elastomer changes its physical pr...operties from elastic and pliable to rigid and brittle and, as a result, loses its sealing ability. Any movement of either the seals or the mating surfaces of the equipment at this temperature could result in damage to the seal surface in the form of cracking or splitting. High pressure has the apparent effect of increasing the Tg of an elastomer; as a general rule, for every 5 MPa (725 psi) bar increase in pressure, the Tg increases by 1°C. This has significant implications for engineers involved in the selection of elastomer seals. For example, an elastomer having a Tg of -30°C (-22°F) at atmospheric pressure, would in effect have a Tg of only -20°C (-4°F) when the pressure acting on the seal is increased to 50 MPa (7250 psi).
